TIPS

GENERAL

cash machines charge an extortionate fee to withdraw. best bet is to bring cash to exchange with you or find an hsbc bank (if you’re from the uk)
bosporous ferry to kadikoy (the asian side) - approx 7 liras using the istanbulkart - one way. check the schedule online Previous
you can cover the main tourist hotspots in less than 1 day - be careful with the prices in the grand bazaar, hop on the tram to karakoy where you can find it all for much cheaper! Previous

GETTING AROUND

the tram connections are amazing and super easy. make sure you have the istanbulkart to get around on bus, tram and the metro tunnel
jump on the tünel from karaoke to istiklar st to save you walking up the killer hill! Previous
taxis are cheap but hard to flag down, so ask any hotel or restaurant to call a company. card payment is taken in some cabs but most don’t. even if they do, it’s an extra cost so get cash out

WHERE TO STAY

roots hotel or sub karakoy - they are both owned by the same owner and 1 is more modern and the other more authentic - both are fabulous!
karakoy area is the best to stay in, close to all the tourist hotspots but far enough out to be amongst the locals and feel istanbul for what it really is Previous
balat, super out the town and a very local village area. we found it to be very quiet at night esp as they don’t sell alcohol in that area much but if you’re up fro something cute and pretty, that’s a good area! Previous
