why go?

  • the enormous menus are almost as operatic as the waiters.
  • should be cheesy, but turns out amazing to the very last aria.
  • and champagne’s included with your meal, if the singing isn’t incentive enough.

when is it?

  • monday to thursday 1.30pm-4.30pm and 8.30pm-12am. friday and saturday 9pm-12am. sunday 7.30pm-10pm.
  • best to reserve, it’s famously thrilling and always booked up.

who to go with?

  • take an opera lover, of course.

Ghost Metro Station (ANDEN 0 PROJECT)

what is it?

  • Andén Cero, Metro Museum or ghostly underground mystery – take your pick.

why go?

  • joins ranks of great underground museums in our books: historical, intriguing and just the right edge of eerie.
  • opened in 1918, closed for decades, the station’s as vintage as it gets – even without the haunting tales.
  • apparitions have been sighted (so it’s said). we saw nothing but loved every minute.

when is it?

  • thursday 10 am-2 pm. friday and saturday 10 am-7 pm. sunday 10am-3pm.
  • come early, prep to queue, and last entry’s 30 minutes before closing time.

who to go with?

  • ghost hunters, train spotters and the hard-to-spook.

cookies at monasterio del corpus christi

what is it?

  • unique purchasing experience, buy a box of cookies at a local convent
  • nuns selling cookies in top secret, but first you need to find the monastery down the backstreets of madrid

why go?

  • the whole monastery is pretty nondescript, you really have to be looking for it in order to find it.
  • there is a legend about cookies that you can hear spoken of in hushed tones on the streets of madrid.
  • these are not your normal store bought cookies. no, these highly sought after treats are baked from ancient recipes dating back to the time of the romans (so they say), and they are made exclusively by nuns who avoid being seen by the general public

  • the monasterio del corpus christi sells cookies from 9.30am-1pm and 4.30pm-6.30pm each day

  • authentic 19th century flamenco, as loved by locals.

  • real flamenco doesn’t use gimmicks or 20th century flash, and this is as real as it gets.
  • they say heart and soul are the most powerful instruments. we believe. but the clapping, guitar playing, dancing and singing are pretty impressive too.
